Fruit skewers are a different way of eating fruit, and it serves to encourage children to eat them, but how are fruit skewers preserved?
It is recommended not to leave fruit skewers for more than 2 hours at room temperature, so they should be kept in the fridge for 2 to 5 days or frozen for 2 to 6 months.
If you want to learn how to preserve fruit skewers correctly, just read on.
How to preserve fruit skewers?
Fruit skewers have a short shelf life, mainly because most fruit is eaten peeled, and this skin represents protection and a method of natural conservation of the fruit.
In addition, there is the issue of oxidation. Fruits such as pears, apples, and bananas turn dark after peeling and cutting.
Although this does not mean that the fruit is bad, visually, it ceases to be striking. Another issue to remember is that each fruit has a different shelf life.
I will be uploading the storage guide of every fruit soon, so use the search bar, and maybe you will be lucky.
Citrus fruits last much longer than the others, which makes them a perfect option to add to the skewers.
However, it is convenient to know that chopped fruit should be left for a long time. Whatever type it is, at room temperature, it can be left for a maximum of 2 hours. [1]
Keep fruit skewers in the fridge
Keep the skewers with the chopped fruit inside the fridge until you eat them.
To store fruit skewers in the fridge, you have to follow the following tips:
- Step 1: Wrap each skewer.
Fruits absorb the smell and taste of other foods very easily, so you should wrap each skewer with plastic film.
- Step 2: Place the skewers inside an airtight container or bag.
The container will add an extra layer of protection, preventing the air from oxidizing the fruit quickly.
If the skewers are stored in an airtight bag, removing all the air is advisable before closing them. A vacuum sealer is a perfect idea.
- Step 3: Store in the fridge.
Place the container in the center or bottom, where the temperature is more stable.
The skewers may be in the fridge for 2 to 5 days. Obviously, after a while, some fruits will not be the same as freshly cut, but it does not mean they are bad.
Freeze fruit skewers
Can fruit skewers be frozen? Some fruits do not freeze well and lose flavor and/or consistency when thawing. Others, instead, are better preserved.
However, freezing fruit skewers is not an option that I highly recommend because the mixture of fruits has different storage adaptabilities.
Therefore, you should choose the type of fruits you want to freeze since some fruits taste well frozen and make an excellent snack on hot days.
In case you want to freeze the fruit skewers because you have no space in the fridge or want to store them longer, just follow these tips:
- Step 1: Wrap the skewers.
In this case, it is advisable to apply two layers of wrapping. It can be a double layer of plastic film or a layer of plastic film with aluminum foil to avoid frostbite burns.
- Step 2: Place the skewers inside an airtight bag.
This bag must be suitable for freezing. You can also use an airtight freezer-resistant container.
- Step 3: Tag.
The storage date is placed on the bag or container to know exactly how long they have been stored.
- Step 4: Save in the freezer.
Following all these steps, the fruit skewers may remain frozen for 2 to 6 months, depending on the type of fruit.
To thaw, it is best to place the skewers for a few hours in the fridge so that they thaw slowly. Then, those fruits that look good or taste can be re-frozen.
How do you know if fruit skewers got bad?
Although the oxidation of fruits makes them not visually attractive does not mean that they are bad. So to determine its condition, it is best to check its taste or smell.
If they taste or smell stale, the fruits spoil and should be discarded.
If they have white, green, or dark spots, they should also be thrown away because it is a sign that the fruit developed mold.
How long do fruit skewers last?
The answer to this question depends on the fruit and the form of storage. Below I leave a summary of the conservation time.
Product | Duration |
Fruit skewer at room temperature | 2 hours |
Refrigerated fruit skewer | 2 – 5 days |
Frozen fruit skewer | 2 – 6 months |
