How to Store Strudel (Apple, Meat, Cheese and +)

The strudel is a typical cake of German, Hungarian, Austrian, Czech, Romanian, and Italian cuisine, which can be filled with apple, cheese, or meat, but how is the strudel preserved?

If it is not stuffed with meat, you can store the strudel for one or two days at room temperature, while in the fridge, it will keep for 3 to 7 days and in the freezer for 1 to 3 months.

To learn more about how to preserve the strudel, I invite you to keep reading.

How to store strudel at room temperature

In the case of a strudel stuffed with meat or cream, storing it at room temperature is not recommended, while in the other two cases, it could, but of course, only if you consider these indications.

  • Step 1: Wait for the strudel to cool.

If it is freshly made, you should wait until it throws out all the internal steam, so put it on a rack, tray, or plate.

  • Step 2: Wrap the strudel with aluminum foil.

Once cold, wrap each strudel with aluminum foil or plastic film, then put it inside a non-airtight bag or container with a lid.

  • Step 3: Store the strudel at room temperature.

Place the strudel in a dry, dark, and cool place. This way, you will keep the apple or cheese strudel at room temperature for one or two days.

If the strudel is covered with some cream, skipping this method, and performing the next one is best.

How to keep strudel in the fridge

If you want to extend the shelf life of the strudel a little more, store it in the fridge, especially if it is filled with meat or covered with some cream.

  • Step 1: Wait for the strudel to cool.

Leave the strudel on a rack or tray until it cools completely.

  • Step 2: Put the strudel in an airtight container.

First, wrap the strudel with cling film or aluminum foil, then put it inside an airtight container, bag, or container.

  • Step 3: Store the strudel in the fridge.

Place them in the coldest part. In this way, if the strudel is stuffed with meat or has some wet topping, you can keep it in the fridge for 2 or 3 days. However, the apple or cheese strudel can be refrigerated for 5 or 7 days.

How to freeze strudel

Can the strudel be frozen? Strudel of any kind freezes very well. You need to follow the subsequent indications.

  • Step 1: Wait for the strudel to cool.

It is essential to wait for the strudel to cool entirely because it could alter its consistency a lot if you keep it hot and damage it faster.

  • Step 2: Put the strudel in an airtight container.

Wrap each strudel with cling film or aluminum foil, then put it in a freezer-safe container or bag with an airtight lid.

  • Step 3: Write the strudel preparation date.

Place the date of preparation or storage of the strudel on the container or bag. If you do not want to scratch it, write the date on a tape or label.

  • Step 4: Store the strudel in the freezer.

The strudel stuffed with meat can be frozen for 1 or 2 months, while you can keep the strudel stuffed with apple or cheese in the freezer for 2 to 3 months.

The strudel covered with some creamy and moist topping should not be frozen. It is better to add it before eating it.

To defrost the strudel, I advise you to do it slowly in the fridge; you just must put it there one night before, and there it can remain one more day. The strudel cannot be re-frozen.

If you want to heat the strudel, use an oven at 370°F (190°C) and heat it for 10 minutes. Remember to remove the wrappers before heating them.

Heat the strudel in an air fryer, set the temperature to 370°F (190°C), and heat for 5 minutes. I do not recommend heating the strudel in the microwave because it will lose its consistency completely.

How do we know if the strudel got bad?

The strudel will become bad if it smells terrible, rotten, and equally, if its taste changes badly.

Another indication that it was spoiled is its appearance. If the strudel is watery, viscous, and easily shattered, it was damaged and is not advised to eat.

Finally, if the strudel has mold, do not eat it, or you could get sick. You can identify the mold as black, blue, green, or white spots or lint.

What is the best way to preserve strudel?

The strudel is better to eat on the same day. Still, in a matter of storage, it is better to leave it inside the fridge since you can keep it there for several days, and its consistency and flavor will not be affected.

You can also leave the strudel at room temperature, as long as it is not stuffed with meat, but it will not last too long. On the other hand, in the freezer, the strudel can be much longer, but its consistency and flavor will change a little.
